Before the first winter was half over, many families were destitute! Their flour was gone, their meat was gone, and there was no fruit or vegetables. The oxen were needed for plowing and the few milk cows for the milk they produced so they were not butchered. For several months no bread was had. Pig-weeds, thistles and segoes formed their diet! Then as spring approached on the 7th of March, 1848 (?), Eunice gave birth to TWINS! One was named Eunice and the other Esther. What a thrill this was for the family, but a lot of work living in such trying times.
